NutraSoft food manufacturing ERP software
Food manufacturing software, compared

What makes NutraSoft different?

NutraSoft runs production, lot traceability, the food safety program and FDA and bilingual CFIA nutrition labels on one set of records, built only for food manufacturers. Traditional ERP can cover this after a long implementation. MRP, label and QC tools each cover one part. NutraSoft covers all four, and a single plant usually goes live in 5 to 14 days.

TL;DR

  • Traditional ERP (SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics) can do most of what a food plant needs, usually through partners, add-ons and a project measured in months. It fits large, multi-site companies with IT staff.
  • Horizontal MRP, label software and food QC tools each do one job well. A small food plant often ends up running two or three of them and reconciling lots, recipes and records between them by hand.
  • NutraSoft puts production, traceability, the food safety program and FDA/CFIA labels on one database for small and mid-sized food manufacturers. It isn't built for non-food manufacturers, and if labels are all you need, a label tool (ours included) is enough.

Who each option fits

Which should you buy?

Every category on this page is the right answer for someone. Here is who, and when to look elsewhere.

Traditional ERP

e.g. SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics

Best for
Large, multi-site or multi-entity companies with an IT team or an implementation partner, complex finance and consolidation needs, and a budget for a project measured in months.
Look elsewhere if
You need to be running this quarter, or nobody on your team can own the configuration.

Horizontal MRP

e.g. Katana, MRPeasy, Fishbowl, Cin7

Best for
Discrete manufacturers (parts, equipment, apparel, consumer goods) and makers with light regulatory exposure who want a quick setup and good QuickBooks and Shopify connections.
Look elsewhere if
You face HACCP audits, FSMA 204, catch weight or CFIA labelling rules. Those usually end up in spreadsheets next to the MRP.

Label & nutrition tools

e.g. Genesis R&D (ESHA), ReciPal, Food Label Maker

Best for
Brands, R&D teams and co-packers who need compliant nutrition labels and don't manage production or inventory in software. NutraSoft's standalone nutrition labelling software sits in this category too.
Look elsewhere if
You need the label tied to lots, inventory or the batch that was actually produced.

Food QC point solutions

e.g. SafetyChain, FoodDocs, FoodReady

Best for
Plants that already run an ERP they're keeping and need a digital food safety program on top of it.
Look elsewhere if
You don't have a system of record for lots and inventory yet. A QC tool needs one to read from.

NutraSoft

Food ERP, quality control and labels on one database

Best for
Small and mid-sized food and beverage manufacturers, typically with 5 or more SKUs and at least one production line, who want production, traceability, food safety and labels on one system, with FSMA 204 or retailer audits ahead.
Look elsewhere if
You don't make food, you're a large enterprise that needs deep multi-entity finance run by its own IT department, or labels are all you need (our standalone labelling software is the better starting point). Quality Control is a separate app, so check which plans include it.
Glossary

Food safety terms a generic MRP won't cover

Auditors ask about these by name. They belong to a food safety program rather than an inventory system, which is why horizontal MRP tools rarely handle them.

Pre-op inspection

A pre-operational check that the line and equipment are clean and ready before production starts. In a well-run program, a missing or failed pre-op stops the run.

Pre-op gates in NutraSoft
Master sanitation schedule

Every cleaning task, how often it runs and which approved chemicals it uses, with a sign-off per task so overdue cleaning shows up before an auditor finds it.

Sanitation and prerequisite programs
Calibration log

The record that thermometers, scales, metal detectors and other instruments were checked against a standard on schedule. A failed calibration should open a non-conformance.

Calibration in Quality Control
Supplier approval

Formal approval of a supplier for a specific material. A supplier cleared for packaging film is not automatically cleared for an allergen-bearing ingredient.

Supplier approval in Quality Control
CAPA

Corrective and preventive action. When something goes wrong you record the root cause, fix the immediate problem, stop it from happening again, and later check that the fix held.

Deviations and CAPA
Mock recall

A practice recall. Pick a lot, find every ingredient that went into it and every customer who received it, and time how long that takes. Certification schemes such as SQF expect them.

Mock recalls and traceability
FSMA 204 KDE / CTE

Under the FDA Food Traceability Rule, foods on the Food Traceability List need Key Data Elements (KDEs) recorded at each Critical Tracking Event (CTE), such as receiving, transforming and shipping, and sent to the FDA as a sortable spreadsheet within 24 hours of a request.

FAQ

Comparing food manufacturing software

Straight answers to what buyers ask while they weigh ERP, MRP, label and food safety tools.

For many food manufacturers, yes. Katana is a horizontal MRP used across many industries, with strong Shopify and QuickBooks connections. What a food plant usually has to add around an MRP is the food layer: HACCP monitoring, pre-op gates, supplier approval per material, catch weight, FSMA 204 records and bilingual CFIA labels. NutraSoft handles those on the same records as production and inventory (the food safety features live in its Quality Control app), and it still syncs with QuickBooks Online and Shopify. If you don't make food, an MRP like Katana is likely the better fit. Compare each vendor's current plans before you decide.

MRP (material requirements planning) software plans what to make and what to buy: bills of materials, work orders and stock levels. ERP covers the whole business, adding purchasing, sales orders, warehouse and accounting. A food ERP goes further with the parts regulators and auditors check: lot genealogy forward and back, expiry and FEFO rotation, allergen and recipe control, HACCP and supplier records, and FDA or CFIA labels generated from the formula. A generic MRP usually covers lot tracking and stops there.

It depends on what your ERP records. Most ERPs track lots and stock, but many don't hold the food safety program itself: the HACCP plan, pre-op and sanitation checks, calibration, supplier approval and CAPA. If you're keeping your ERP, a food QC point solution is a sensible addition. Ask how it gets lot data, and whether it can stop a production start or a receipt. NutraSoft Quality Control runs on the same records as the NutraSoft ERP, so there is no sync to maintain.

It depends on what is forcing the decision. If you only need nutrition labels, a label tool is enough, and NutraSoft sells its nutrition labelling software on its own. If you're outgrowing spreadsheets for production, inventory and lot traceability, or an audit or a large retail order is coming, look at a food-specific ERP such as NutraSoft. If you run several legal entities and have an IT department, traditional ERP can be worth the longer project. Whatever you shortlist, test it on your own recipes before you commit.

No. If labels are the only job, a nutrition label tool is the right size of purchase. NutraSoft's standalone nutrition labelling software produces FDA Nutrition Facts panels and bilingual CFIA Nutrition Facts tables from the same recipe. If you later need production and traceability, the ERP uses the same recipe engine and database, so you move to it without migrating data.

For small and mid-sized food manufacturers, often yes. Traditional ERP is powerful and highly configurable, but food workflows usually arrive through partners or add-ons, and projects are measured in months. NutraSoft is built for food from the start, and most single-facility customers go live in 5 to 14 days. If you need complex multi-entity finance across several countries, or you already have an IT team running a large ERP, traditional ERP remains the stronger choice.

You need a system that records the Key Data Elements at each Critical Tracking Event (receiving, transforming, shipping and so on) for foods on the Food Traceability List, and can give the FDA a sortable electronic spreadsheet within 24 hours. That can be an ERP with strong lot tracking, a traceability or QC tool fed by your inventory data, or a food ERP like NutraSoft, which captures the KDEs as your team receives, produces and ships. Software supports compliance; the legal responsibility stays with the manufacturer.

It ranges widely. Traditional ERP projects commonly take 6 to 12 months. Self-serve MRP and label tools can be running in days, but on their own they won't cover food safety or deep traceability. With NutraSoft, most single-facility customers go live in 5 to 14 days, including ingredient import, recipe migration, training and a first production run. Multi-facility rollouts take 3 to 6 weeks.
